A Story of Love (and Accounting)
Alumna Reflects on Meeting Husband in the Accounting Society
Some people find love in the strangest places. In the case of Baruch alumni Janet (’82) and Wayne Naegele (’82), that unlikely place was the Accounting Society.
“I remember walking into the office for my first meeting and thinking, ‘Woah – who is this?’” Janet recalls. It was the fall of 1981 and both she and Wayne were seniors at Baruch, looking to boost their resumes with extracurricular activities.
“He was the treasurer and I became secretary,” Naegele continues. “We both attended graduation in 1982, and by ’84 we were married!”
Thirty-three years later, the Naegeles are living on Long Island, still happily married. After graduation, Wayne and Janet both worked at Coopers & Lybrand for a number of years (Janet left after having their first child) and today, Wayne serves as Senior Partner at Presti & Naegele Accounting Offices.
Janet notes that her husband’s firm has strong Baruch connections: one of Presti & Naegele’s newest partners, Brian M. Whelan (’06), is also a proud Baruch alumnus.
“Wayne and Brian, as well as five other accountants, either received a Bachelor’s or Master’s from Baruch,” Janet explains. “And that’s not even counting the Baruch interns. So, I’d estimate the entire firm is about 22% Baruch.”
But the connections don’t end there. Wayne and Janet have four children, and one – Wayne, Jr. – currently attends Baruch, studying finance. Although he hasn’t joined the Accounting Society like his parents, Janet is glad that her son has continued her family’s Baruch legacy.
“Baruch was a special place for us, obviously,” Janet says. “I’m glad that, between the office and our son, the College is still a part of our lives.”
Bonus: Janet was also a proud member of Helpline during her time at Baruch and keeps in touch with her fellow Helpline alumni! Were you a member of this group? Let us know by contacting us here >
