IRS Starts Notifying 1 Million Tax Preparers of Need to Register Online

The Internal Revenue Service Oct. 25 began notifying about 1 million tax return preparers that they need to register with the IRS and renew their preparer tax identification number (PTIN) as part of the IRS’s new tax preparer regulatory regime.

The IRS will be sending approximately 125,000 notification letters each week for eight weeks, IRS News Release 2010-106 said. The notifications are based on those who currently have PTINs, thereby bypassing tax preparers who were not formerly known to the IRS. However, the service has been reaching out through press releases and You Tube videos to other preparers—those without PTINs—who may not have gotten the word that they need to register.

In addition, the service initiated a campaign in recent weeks to make sure those who already have PTINs are aware that they still need to register—although they may be eligible to use the same PTIN. This includes certified public accountants, attorneys, and enrolled agents.
